Bringing a 1974 Ford Bronco Back to Life: Fuel Injection, Brakes & Drivability Upgrades

This 1974 Ford Bronco came to us with several drivability concerns that made it difficult to enjoy. From rough engine performance and intermittent starting problems to wandering steering and outdated fuel system components, this Bronco was ready for a complete mechanical refresh.

Solving the Engine Performance Issues

The Bronco's engine would occasionally start, but it ran rough, lacked power, and even backfired during startup. Our inspection found the carburetor was over-fueling due to stuck floats, causing poor performance and inconsistent operation. While recalibrating the float level improved engine performance, the carburetor's internal passages had deteriorated enough that a rebuild—or better yet, an upgrade—was the best long-term solution.

Rather than rebuilding the original carburetor, the owner chose to modernize the fuel system with a complete electronic fuel injection conversion.

Upgrading to Holley Sniper 2 EFI

With the factory fuel system already showing its age, this was the perfect opportunity to convert the Bronco to electronic fuel injection.

We installed a complete Holley Sniper 2 EFI Master Kit, including a HyperSpark ignition system and distributor. The original carburetor and ignition components were removed, and the new system was carefully installed and wired. New heat-resistant gaskets, spark plug wires, throttle linkage, and return springs were fitted before performing the initial tuning and timing adjustments.

The result is a Bronco that starts easier, idles smoother, delivers more consistent power, and provides significantly improved reliability compared to the original carbureted setup.

Modern Fuel Tank Conversion

The original three-tank fuel system had become unreliable, and the fuel gauge readings were inconsistent depending on which tank was selected.

To simplify the entire system, we converted the Bronco to a single rear fuel tank using a Kincer Chassis Krawlers Edge 304 Stainless Steel 23-Gallon EFI Fuel Tank equipped with a high-flow Aeromotive fuel pump, fuel sender, and skid plate protection.

During the conversion we:

Removed the factory fuel tanks.
Installed the new stainless-steel EFI tank.
Replaced the fuel filler and vent hoses.
Installed new fuel lines, fuel filter, pressure regulator, and AN fuel hose.
Eliminated the complicated factory multi-tank plumbing.

This upgrade not only improves reliability but also prepares the Bronco for years of dependable driving.

Restoring Safe Braking Performance

Braking performance had become another concern. The rear drum brakes were no longer performing correctly, and the vehicle would pull sharply to the left during braking.

To address these issues, we performed a complete brake system overhaul that included:

Wilwood rear disc brake conversion
New front brake pads
Rotor resurfacing
Front wheel bearing service
New wheel seals
New inner axle seals
Replacement front and rear brake hoses
New hard brake lines
Brake system bleeding and adjustment
Master cylinder pushrod adjustment
Brake bias adjustment

These upgrades dramatically improve stopping power while providing easier maintenance and more consistent braking performance.

Fixing the Rear Differential Leak

We also addressed a leaking rear differential by replacing the pinion seal, inspecting the pinion yoke, properly torquing the assembly, and refilling the differential with fresh gear oil.

Improving Handling and Road Manners

Like many early Broncos, this one suffered from wandering steering and vague handling on the road.

To improve stability, we installed a Hellwig heavy-duty front sway bar designed for lifted Early Broncos. During installation, we removed the front springs, installed the sway bar mounting hardware, upgraded the spring retainer hardware where necessary, and properly torqued the entire assembly.

The result is noticeably improved cornering stability and a much more confident driving experience.

Transmission Improvements

The Bronco was also missing its automatic transmission kickdown cable. We installed and adjusted a new kickdown cable kit to restore proper transmission operation and improve shift quality.
